African American Innovators in Tech | Frank S. Greene

Frank S Greene is known as one of the pioneer innovators of semiconductor technology. He was one of the first black students to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington University, St. Louis. Afterward, he bagged his master’s at Purdue University and was in the U.S. Air Force for four years, where he rose to the rank of captain. He then served at Fairchild Semiconductor Research and Development lab as a system and memory chip designer.

Greene developed the integrated circuit and assisted in creating the world’s fastest memory chip in the 1960s. Frank S. Greene obtained the patent that made Fairchild a leading firm in the semiconductor industry. His groundbreaking innovation ended the stereotype held against engineers of color in Silicon Valley.

Further down in his career, he founded two software companies: Technology Development Corporation and Zero One Systems. Frank S Greene also founded NewVista Capital. A firm through which he launched several start-ups aimed at gathering funds for companies. NewVista Capital is then led by women and other minority groups and communities. Greene was recognized in 2009 by Palo Alto City Hall as an important African-American in history. The Silicon Valley Engineering Council also inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1991.
